The Canada Bay at Fivedock was the venue for the clubs official launch for the 2011/12 Futsal Premier League season, with well over 200 people in attendance.
Matteo Maiorana commenced proceedings with opening speeches and introduced Hyundai A league players Bernie Ibini Isei from the Central Coast Mariners and former club representative Terry Antonis from Sydney F.C.
Queensland Roars newest signing and current Matilda Catherine Cannulli was also in attendance as was another former club representative Teresa Polias who will be donning the jersey of Sydney F.C in this seasons W league campaign.
All four of these players played Futsal in their younger years, Bernie for the Sydney City Eagles and Catherine for the Mascot Vipers.
It was fantastic to see all four players whom have represented their country give up their time to be part of the clubs launch.
Terry Antonis was first up to hand out the players their strips for the new season and was interviewed by Matteo after handing the Pre Academies and u/12 teams their season strips.
Terry was asked by Matteo “With all the international teams you have played for and all the experienced coaches youve had over the years of your career so far, who has been the best coach youve ever played under?”
Not surprising to many in attendance his reply came back “Carmine Bortone” our current Mens coach and Terrys original futsal coach at the club.
The response drew quite a chuckle with Carmine throwing his hands in the air pleading his innocence.
With both siblings now playing for the club with sister Dimity in the u/12 Girls and his brother George in our u/11s academy Matteo posed the question…. “Are they better than you Terry?” “Only on play station” was the reply which drew quite a laugh from the 200 or so in attendance.
Teresa Polias was next to be called on stage to help present the strips for the u/12 Girls team and was asked about her many fond memories of her futsal career. The one which struck her the most was when she was part of the Magic u/16 Girls team and they played Hawkesbury Commodores in the Major semi final and the team was down 3-0 but behind two brilliant Teresa goals the girls came back and won 4-3.
Bernie Ibini Isei was next on stage and was asked about his past season with the Mariners and the recent World Cup that he and Terry competed in and Bernie was also highly positive of players especially at an early age playing futsal. He missed futsal but it was good to see both his younger brother and sister playing the sport.
Some healthy rivalry then came to the fore between the two young guns when Terry asked if Bernie remembered the Grandfinal clash when Terrys Magic team beat Bernies Sydney City team in extra time.
Bernie un-surprisingly couldn’t remember the match in question.
Catherine Cannulli a current Matilda handed out the season gear to the u/14 and 16 girls and spoke brilliantly. She gave the club the inside scoop on her decision to play for the Queensland Roar this season after her departure from Sydney in the W league as well as reminiscing on her best times playing Futsal.
To end the evening the two senior coaches Carmine and Matteo selected their team coaches for their respective teams which saw Andrew Paine and Dylan Maloney selected as the Mens Captains whilst Niqui Caridad was selected as the Womens captain for the up coming season.
The club also announced their club Captains for the up coming season which were Marino Musumeci, Roberto Maiorana, Natalie Spirovski and Rose Scarlato.
After their speeches the night came to an official close.
Overall the night was a fantastic success in players meeting one another.
The season is well and truly here with kick off just a matter of weeks away.
