Match Reports – Round 8 vs Mascot Vipers

1st vs 2nd in the Club Championship and it was imperative at a minimum that the club had a good round vs its biggest challengers.

The 12 girls dropped their first points of the season with a 3 all draw when leading with only a minute to go.

Our girls pushed up in defence and unfortunately conceded a late goal to end their perfect start to the season.

The 12 boys toiled hard against undefeated opposition but just couldn’t muster enough goal scoring chances. The boys are playing well and could have a real big say in this seasons run in.

The 14 boys took on second placed opposition and ran over them at break neck pace winning their 8th consecutive game 7-0.

The 14 girls continued on their merry way with a clinical 4-1 victory.

Unfortunately both our u/16 teams suffered defeat in close matches.

The Youth Mens like our 12 girls suffered defeat in the last few second of the match with our youth boys conceding a goal with only 3 seconds left on the clock.

The Womens went down in a close match whilst our Mens stayed in semi final contention with an excellent win.

Overall we lost the round 10-16 in only our second round defeat of the season. Thankfully we still lead the competition by 10 points and up defending Champions Sydney City Eagles this weekend.

All the boys did well. They played hard and looked good. Well done Academy boys, week in week out all players are doing excellent. Thanks to the parents without them nothing is possible.

12 Girls

In this highly anticipated match the girls again showed great mettle to come from behind and can count themselves unlucky not to take all 3 points. Never the less it was an enthralling contest that went right down to wire and more importantly they remain undefeated.

Princess was first to have a good attempt at goal after 2 minutes when she won the ball close to the half way line and went on her usual barn storming run, only to narrowly miss the target. On 3 minutes Angelique was unlucky not to open the scoring when she hit a cracking free kick which they somehow scrambled off the line.

We managed to open the scoring after 6 minutes when Georgia and Princess combined well to set up Bianca to slot home from the left hand side.

Bianca almost doubled lead a minute later but the Vipers keeper was alert and saved well. Dimity then had a good chance but could only shoot straight at their keeper, who saved comfortably.

Sheridan was then faced with a one on one but sprinted off her line to clear quickly and negate a good chance for the Vipers. On 15 minutes Vipers made us pay for not putting away our chances when they scored from a half inside the “D”, making it 1-1. With half time looming,

Chiara put through a great ball to Princess but she just failed to hit the target and so the scores remained level at the break.

Vipers had the wind in their sails for the start of the second half and Siena was called on after 3 minutes to make a great double tackle when danger loomed close to our goals. Sheridan was called on shortly after to clear quickly, as they tried to counter all our moves. Princess was quick to return hostilities when she hit a great shot from way out wide but it only managed to take a layer of paint of the cross bar on the way over.

Bianca then won a great tackle on the goal line and was unlucky not to score from the resulting shot. As often happens though, Vipers were able to launch a counter attack and after some scrappy play, had a shot on goal, which Sheridan managed to save. Unfortunately for us, they were first to the rebound and went 2-1 up after 9 minutes gone.

Georgia then took matters into her own hands and won the ball 5 meters inside her own half. She then skipped around another two Viper players and bore down on goal. With more defenders closing around her she launched the “bomb of the year”, into the top right hand corner to put the scores level at 2-2 with 9 minutes remaining.

Straight off the restart the girls were caught napping and Sheridan had to make a smart save to keep parity. Princess then had a great chance at goal blocked, when it had certainty written all over it, after she turned her marker inside out. Shortly after Angelique also had a great shot cleared off the line after a nice layback from Siena.

On 16 minutes Princess then started off and finished a great move with the assistance of Angelique to put us 3-2 up. Despite all our pressure they continue to press us on the counter and had Angelique working hard against their long ball tactic. Unfortunately with only a minute remaining the girls couldn’t deal with a ball in the bottom corner and Vipers managed to scramble a goal to level the ledger. With not enough time left to reply it finished 3-3 as the final whistle sounded.

Well done girls keep up the hard work and stay focused.

14 Boys

Taking on second placed opposition our boys were up for a big game and were out of the blocks right from the start going in at half time 3-0 up.

The boys continued their excellent form with another 4 goals in the second half to comfortably win 7-0 and make it 7 games on the trot.

14 Girls

Congratulations Girls ….. great game today, I can see heading into the 2nd round you are all gelling well and are now getting to know how your team members play and you are using it to the teams advantage by winning.

The game began fast and stayed like that for the whole 40 mins. Vipers wanted the win because they are fighting to remain in the top 4. The 14 girls wanted to win to keep themselves on top. Mini scored one in the first 5 mins of the game, with a few shots on goal Nadia was unlucky but she was defending strong to keep their attackers a bay. The second goal came with a great pass by Vic that Mini ran onto and put in the back of the net, half a goal each girls.

Vipers were fighting harder but with our girls they were making it hard, however we did let one slip away and they scored. Our attacking players were moving the ball down the court but were unlucky with a few shots, Vipers defense was up.

The final score was 3 – 1. Great work girls

16 Boys

Coming up against the Vipers in the past has been without a doubt very challenging. In the first 7 minutes of the game both teams were trying to work each other out, however the Vipers drew first blood and then soon after went 2 nil up. Keeper John Dimitrakas pulled off a couple of good saves to stop the Vipers from scoring again.

Magic boys hit back with a good one two from Blade to Manny then back to Blade to tap it in to make the score 2-1. Just before half time Vipers were awarded a penalty but John Dimitrakas was all fired up and ready for the shot which he saved and the score was kept 2-1 at half time.

With both teams eager to get back on the court for the second half a Vipers player got a second yellow card and was sent off. Keeper Dom Badalato was also on fire making some great saves. Blade had a shot which the Vipers keeper fumbled and Lawerence was there to tap it in and make the score 2 all. The game was intense and both teams were shooting but their shots were denied by both keepers. With 3 minutes remaining Manny strikes a long range shot which hits the post but with a minute to go Vipers scored to win the game 3-2. The Magic boys played good and hard but it wasn’t their day.

16 Girls

The 16 girls looked in fine form in the first half matching it with Vipers. A set move off a corner saw the Vipers hit the lead but we were making plenty of chances too.

The second half was also very even until a controversial penalty was awarded to Vipers to give them a two goal buffer.

The girls were still very much in the match but with only minutes left on the clock, a third goal nailed the result for the Vipers.

The girls should be much happier with their overall effort as they were passing the ball and creating opportunities. Let’s plan now for next week.

Open Womens

In a must win game our girls let themselves down with a loss that could well and truly hurt our chances to make the top 4. With a 12 player squad it makes it very tough when only 6 are available.

The return of Nat Spirovski was a welcome sight but the next 3 weeks are crucial.
